Pento is setting a new standard in payroll with its tech-enabled payroll solution for modern People and Finance teams. Pento lets you run payroll in real-time, automating the entire process. We're a remote-first company, pushing forward how we work for the better.

We’re looking for a Staff Engineer who is comfortable in their expertise, can drive excellence at speed within their squad, and consistently deliver high-quality work, challenging urgency, quality and security.

The impact of this role will not only be felt in your squad, but as you influence decisions, your proposals will affect other squads and teams across the business. Your team's work will directly connect to the company's objectives and drive the value of the customer.

The role
You’ll have the future front of mind as you design and implement large and complex changes to our systems and frameworks. Through owning the end-to-end execution, you’ll see projects through to the end by harnessing a deep understanding of the problem and spearheading the solution.

As you lead with respect and candour, you’ll challenge and drive technical discussion that gets the team to the best decision and puts you in the leading position to mentor, coach and drive the individual and collective growth of your squad and the wider engineering team.

As you design and implement features, modules and services from scratch, roadblocks and uncertainty are where you succeed. You can use them to drive efficiency and turn around complex situations.

Our tech stack ️
We build and host our application and tools using modern and reliable technologies that our team knows and trusts, including React, GraphQL, Golang, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Docker and Kubernetes.

Our levelling
The salary band for this L4 role is £95-115k. Titles and compensation at Pento are dependent on our internal levelling (L1-6) which we'll assess throughout the interview process. We can't guarantee titles and compensation until later in our process once we've assessed competencies, technical skills, and where you land on our frameworks.

Your qualities

  • You own your impact. You find a way to make things happen, and your word is your bond – when you say something will happen, it happens
  • You champion the customer. Our customers underpin everything we do. You use the customer’s perspective to communicate product history and future vision. You can show deep empathy for the customer and use the customer as your north star to drive decisions and rally teams around the impact and value
  • You care about people and their growth. Through your background as a senior engineer, you know how to draw the best out of others. You’re recognised for your technical mentorship, and you actively participate in cross-squad solutions that drive the company's growth
  • You communicate intentionally. Through your delivery, you can clearly communicate to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You’re a careful listener who can probe effectively and defend your proposals with arguments developed from your deep understanding

Your experience ✨

  • You've had a successful track record as a Staff or Senior Engineer in another company and can articulate and demonstrate your development over time
  • You've got deep understanding and experience in at least two engineering specialisations
  • You can articulate how you hold yourself and others to high bars of technical excellence
  • You have strong systems design capabilities
  • You've designed and implemented features, modules or services from scratch
  • You can give great examples of where you've been able to help engineering teams figure out the why, the what, the how and that you're also able to do
